Eurovelo Bike Cabin / BIKE THING

Year: 2019
Type: Competition
Status: Design
Team: Epigram Architecture and Design

Bike Thing is a cabin designed to accommodate cyclists who are travelling along the Eurovelo 6 route. This route spans over 4,400 kilometers, from the Atlantic to the Black Sea near the Danube River, offering cyclists the opportunity to explore picturesque coastlines, historic castles, and bustling cities. The cabin is equipped with essential amenities to cater to the needs of cyclists, such as a place to rest, sleep, clean up, and repair their bikes.

Professional cyclists often require frequent stops every 30-50 kilometers during their long-distance journeys. With this in mind, we have strategically located cabins along the Eurovelo 6 route at specific intervals. These cabins are designed to cater to the varying needs of cyclists based on the services available in nearby cities. Each cabin offers sleeping area in max. 50 kilometers and a bike repair stand within 30 kilometers. For instance, the distance between Bratislava and Wien is approximately 80 kilometers, and we have provided two complex and one basic cabin in that distance.

The primary goal of the Bike Thing project is to offer a low-cost, locally-sourced, and adaptable solution for cyclists traveling along the Eurovelo 6 route. The cabin structure is built with reclaimed materials, such as timber sourced from the surrounding area. For insulation, off-cuts are used, and a wood-burning stove is installed to provide additional heat. To allow for ample sunlight and transparency, polycarbonate panels are used along with glass on the facade. The design of the cabin is intended to inspire the mind and heart, with a spacious interior and multi-functional exterior volumes that allow for the beautiful play of shadows and light to be observed.
